Waste to Wonders

Yayasan JCorp's efforts to strengthen community recycling began with the launch of the Recycling Hub @ B5 Johor Street Market in Johor Bahru on 18 February 2024, in collaboration with Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (MBJB) and SWM Environment. The hub provides a dedicated facility for communities to recycle responsibly while benefiting from a reward-based system that converts recyclable materials into points redeemable for monetary value.

The launch recorded 288.4 kg of recyclables through KITARcycle, 270 kg of fabric and 576.7 kg of used cooking oil, marking the beginning of a wider effort to make recycling more accessible and rewarding.

Complementing the B5 facility, the recycling drop-off point at Bandar Dato Onn further extends recycling accessibility within the community. Together, these collection points provide practical avenues for households to participate in resource recovery.

Building on this growing recycling network, Waste to Wonders brings the circular economy to life through public engagement, creative reuse and hands-on environmental learning. Rather than focusing solely on waste collection, the initiative invites communities to discover how discarded materials can be transformed into something useful, creative and valuable.

In 2025, the initiative featured a Drive-Thru Recycling programme at B5 Johor Street Market, which collected more than five tonnes of recyclable materials, including paper, plastics, aluminium, electronic waste, textiles and used cooking oil. Organised in collaboration with MBJB and SWM Environment, the programme brought recycling closer to the public through a convenient and accessible collection format.

The momentum continued in 2026 during the JCorp Group Sustainability & Yayasan JCorp Open Day, where the Drive-Thru Recycling programme collected approximately 2.5 tonnes of recyclable materials from 45 households. Beyond recycling, four creative sustainability workshops and a colouring competition engaged 170 participants, introducing new perspectives on waste through practical activities and creative expression.

By connecting permanent recycling facilities with engaging community activations, Yayasan JCorp is developing a more inclusive approach to waste management, one that makes recycling easier to practise while encouraging communities to rethink the value of the resources around them.

Cabaran Botol Kaca Pun Boleh

Every year, valuable recyclable materials are lost through improper disposal. Addressing this challenge requires more than awareness. It calls for accessible recycling opportunities, sustained participation and a shared commitment to recovering resources that would otherwise go to waste.

Through Cabaran Botol Kaca Pun Boleh, Yayasan JCorp joined forces with SWM Environment, the Johor State Education Department and MBJB to encourage glass recycling on a wider scale, bringing schools and communities together in a collective effort to reduce waste.

The initiative achieved a remarkable collection of 107,200 kg of glass bottles, exceeding its original target of 30,000 kg by more than 250%. Based on the programme's emissions calculation, this was associated with an estimated 306,592 kg of CO₂ emissions avoided, highlighting the potential environmental benefits of recovering glass for recycling.

The achievement demonstrates the scale of impact that can be generated when individual actions are brought together through a coordinated effort. Beyond the collection figures, the programme has strengthened participation in glass recycling while encouraging greater awareness of resource recovery and responsible waste management.

Together, these initiatives form part of Yayasan JCorp's expanding circular economy efforts, combining recycling infrastructure, community engagement and strategic partnerships to recover more resources, reduce waste and encourage a lasting shift towards responsible consumption.

MYSaveFood Initiative: Turning Surplus Food into Sustenance

Ramadan is a season of generosity, but it can also bring an increase in food waste. Through the MYSaveFood initiative, Yayasan JCorp turned surplus into sustenance, ensuring that good food reached those who needed it most.

Implemented across Johor, from Kulai to Muar, the initiative rescued more than 2.5 tonnes of surplus edible food from Ramadan bazaars and redistributed it to asnaf and B40 communities, benefiting 3,967 individuals. In collaboration with strategic partners, the initiative addressed food waste at its source while extending meaningful support to communities in need.

To strengthen the efficiency and accountability of the redistribution process, the ReMeal mobile application was used to track, categorise and manage food donations in real time, enhancing transparency throughout the operation.

The initiative was made possible through the collective efforts of Pertubuhan Pemuda GEMA Malaysia, KPDN Johor, Gerakan Pengguna Siswa and Johor Corporation Group, alongside dedicated volunteers who helped ensure that surplus food was put to good use.

More than a food rescue effort, MYSaveFood demonstrates how collective action can address food waste, promote responsible consumption and support vulnerable communities. By giving surplus food a second chance, Yayasan JCorp continues to create meaningful social and environmental value towards a more sustainable future.

Powering an Off Grid School with Solar Energy

Access to reliable electricity is essential for quality education. Through the Future Powered Project, Yayasan JCorp contributed a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System to Sekolah Agama Tunjuk Laut, Kota Tinggi, one of Johor’s few off grid schools, supporting its transition towards cleaner energy and a more sustainable learning environment.

Handed over on 17 December 2025, the system was delivered in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Majlis Agama Islam Negeri Johor (MAINJ), Johor Plantations Group Berhad (JPG) and strategic partner IJM Indah ICP Piles. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on conventional diesel generators while providing a more stable and sustainable electricity supply for the school.

With a capacity of 5.6 kWp, the solar PV system comprises nine solar panels, one Growatt SPF 5000 ES inverter and four Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries. Equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) technology, the system enables real time energy monitoring, supporting operational reliability, efficient energy management and long term maintenance.

The installation is expected to enhance teaching and learning continuity for 250 students, as well as teachers, by providing a more reliable power supply for classroom activities and digital learning facilities. Beyond addressing immediate energy needs, the project also serves as a scalable model for bringing renewable energy solutions to other off grid schools across Johor.

Building on this initiative, Yayasan JCorp plans to extend the Future Powered Project to three additional locations, expanding access to reliable and sustainable energy for more school communities. This expansion reflects Yayasan JCorp’s continued commitment to supporting education through practical, long term solutions that address infrastructure challenges.

By combining clean energy with essential educational resources, the Future Powered Project demonstrates how strategic partnerships can create better learning opportunities while advancing environmental sustainability. Through this initiative, Yayasan JCorp continues to build more resilient, inclusive and sustainable educational environments for communities across Johor.
